Intravenous sedation (IV sedation or IVS) is often recommended for surgical procedures or for patients who experience severe dental anxiety.

How do I prepare for IV sedation?

Our team will provide you with specific instructions to help you prepare for your appointment. For example, eating and drinking should be stopped at least eight hours before you are given IVS. Dr. Li will give more detailed instructions depending on your appointment time. We’ll ensure you know what to expect.

Can any periodontist perform IV sedation?

While most dental care providers can perform nitrous oxide, very few can perform IV sedation. Dr. Li is trained and licensed to perform IV sedation to help ensure you have a comfortable and successful treatment.

How does IV sedation work?

A small IV needle will be introduced into your vein and a sedative injected directly into your bloodstream. You’ll slip into a deep level of relaxation and be mostly unaware of anything that’s going on.

Does IV sedation put you to sleep?

IVS works quickly and provides an adequate level of unconsciousness to block any awareness of the dental procedure being performed. While it doesn’t put you completely “under,” your level of grogginess afterward will require a friend or family member to drive you home. You should spend the remainder of the day resting and you may or may not remember anything about the procedure itself.
